Stunning Antique Medaillon Au Firmament Diamond Enamel Shake Locket

Marie Antoinette put celestial jewels on a map of late 18th and early 19th century France, and indeed the whole of Europe. Usually, this style featured rings in blue enamel or glass in dark royal blue, mimicking the night sky, aglow with diamonds or paste gems as stars. Pendants and lockets were rarer. These jewels became the height of fashion, a craze, and an absolute must-have for the wealthy. After all, their Queen wore hers every day! They can be seen in the portraits of Marie Antoinette, she started wearing hers to celebrate the birth of her son. The rings are called Bague au Firmament, which means "a ring of the sky" in French. So, presenting our Medallion au Firmament, or the "locket of the sky".

The locket is Continental in origin and created around 1820 in 14 karat rose gold. It is not hallmarked so we tested it to confirm the gold content. The surround is enamelled in dark, royal blue enamel with white surround, and set with early old mine, cushion cut diamonds in their silver settings. The quality of this locket is amazing, even its bale is set with sparkly diamonds! The diamond total weight is estimated to be 1.10 carats. All the diamonds are gorgeous, clean and white, beautifully cut. They really are the brightest of stars! The locket opening and closing mechanism is in superb condition, we filled it with 4.01 carats of sparkling, lively diamond chips. Now, you have a locket of the skies that is absolutely blazing with starry light !

The main, round part of locket measures 1.14 inches in diameter and the total length with the bale is 1.54 inches. Not huge and not small, we think a perfect wearable size. The locket weighs 8.1 grams with diamonds and 7.3 grams without. You can change the gems in the locket for others for a different look if you so wish, and also, fit the locket with a photograph, with diamonds dancing in the front of it. It is in fantastic antique condition.
