Mid Century Natural No Heat Sapphire 14K Gold Yugoslavian Ring

Mid Century Natural No Heat Sapphire 14K Gold Yugoslavian Ring

£925.00Price

We have a lovely natural sapphire ring for you with an interesting history !

The ring has Yugoslavian hallmarks for 14 karat gold, dating it to 1973-1981. We place it at the beginning of that period due to the workmanship of this ring and strong, traditional, still Art Deco influenced styling.

The Kingdom of Yugoslavia was formed as a dictatorial monarchy in 1929 by king Alexander I. It was a former territory of the Austro Hungarian Empire, which stretched over an enormous part of Europe, from the territories of modern Poland to the north to Northern Italy in the south, from Switzerland to Imperial Russia, and comprised many nations. The defeat of the German and Austro-Hungarian Empires at the end of the WW1 led to the rise of separate republics of Germany, Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Austria, and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, which became The Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929, and then a socialist federal state following the end of WW2.

This Mid- Century ring is designed in a very much traditional, Austro-Hungarian style of the 1930's. Had it not been for the hallmarks, we would be inclined to date the ring to then. It is very possible that the ring is earlier and had been re-hallmarked in the 70's, given the precious gemstone it is set with. The years of the Soviet influence in those European countries were tumultuous times, and gold articles were banned from sale without hallmarks.

The ring features an elegant, simple shank and an oval bezel setting finished with fine mille graining. This setting holds a lovely, natural, no heat sapphire. The gemstone has been checked by an FGA qualified gemologist. The sapphire measures 6.73 by 5.55 mm and is estimated to weigh 1.00 carats. It sits on your finger at 4.7 mm in height and weighs 2 grams. It is size US 5 3/4 or UK L 1/4 and is easily re-sizeable. The ring has clearly been worn as an engagement ring, as it is dented on the sides of the setting, where it touched the wedding/ eternity bands. This not visible when worn and absolutely stable, meaning it will not dent any further ! The sapphire is a gorgeous, sparkly stone of beautiful colour and in lovely antique condition, as is the rest of the ring.

Sapphire is a September Birthstone and a 45th wedding anniversary gift.

We love ... the simplicity of this ring, the elegant, toned down look with the gemstone that shines so brightly. We love the origin and wonder about all of the history this ring has seen.
