Mid-Century English Enamel Thistle Charm Pendant Dangler

We love jewellery with special meaning and symbolism, and just look at this absolute beauty ! What a lucky find! 

Thistle is Scotland's national emblem, and represents protection, bravery, independence and strength in overcoming adversity. Celtic traditions gave it a meaning of devotion, while folklore told of its power to word off evil, purifying and curing all ills, including love sickness !! It is a symbol of good luck too. So fitting, as it really is a wonder how resilient and hardy this gorgeous flower is, strength and beauty all in one is a heavenly thing. 

Bursting with vibrant colours of enamel in purple and shades of green, this English, vintage little pendant - or charm - is the sweetest jewel ever ! It is beautifully made in 9 karat yellow gold and hallmarked with "9" and "375" for English 9 karat gold, also a date letter for 1965 and a makers mark, which we unfortunately cannot make out - the hallmarks are tiny ! They are positioned on the reverse of the pendant along the veins of the leaves. The enamel has possibly been expertly repaired, as a little bit of the hallmark is covered with it, but if it was not for this little detail we would have never known. It is generally in really good condition, with a couple tiny, insignificant areas where it has rubbed off - this is consistent with the pendants age. Only a careful inspection with a strong jewellers loupe will let you see it though. The thistle measures 10.15mm top to bottom and 13.7mm side to side. Together with the bale the pendant is 16 mm long. It weighs 1.2 grams and is in lovely overall vintage condition.
