Little Antique Suffragette Pendant Charm Dangler
The English ladies of the late 19th and early 20th century demonstrated their allegiance to the women's rights to vote movement by wearing jewellery in the colours of the suffrage movement. These were white, green and purple, as per the Women's Social and Political Union colours. The jewellery was usually Edwardian or Arts And Crafts in style, feminine and delicate, set with semi precious stones like peridots, amethysts, purple hued garnets and tourmalines, with pearls or enamel to represent white. Wearing a piece of jewellery in those colours was deeply symbolic of the cause. The movement swept through England, grew in popularity and became fashionable to support, so much so, that by 1908 , royal jewellers, Mappin & Webb issued a dedicated catalogue of suffragette jewellery!
Our sweet little floral pendant was hand crafted around 1900-1910 in 9 karat rosy yellow gold, not hallmarked, but tested. It is classically English Edwardian in style and set with a peridot, purple garnet and seed pearls. The total length of the pendant with the bale is 23.2 mm, it is 8 mm wide max and weighs 0.58 grams. In lovely antique condition.
We love ..... this pretty, feminine symbol of the determination of a better, more empowered life !
