Art Deco 18K Gold Amber Pendant

This 18 karat yellow gold amber pendant is simple, elegant and smart. It is also a little bit magical.

It is not hallmarked, and testing reveals it is 18 karat gold. Judging by the style and workmanship it was made around 1920-1950. The rich, honey coloured amber shows characteristics of the Baltic Sea origin. The white, sandy beaches of the Baltic Sea are gorgeous, with pine forests that come up right to the beach, and often to the water's edge. The pines are surrounded by dunes speckled with grasses swaying in the winds.... 50 million years ago the ancient pine forests were swallowed up by the sea and over time the pine resin formed into amber. Isn't it amazing, being able to wear this nature's gift ? Doesn't it make you look at this stone and think ... it's just magic! Cleopatra used to burn amber and its original name, "boernstein" in German means "the burning stone ". It is the only gemstone that can be electrified and it is believed that it can dissipate the energy which causes disease. Hence, unpolished amber is made into alcohol tincture and it is even used in cosmetics....

Our Baltic treasure here is made in a form of an impactful, simple, oval pendant. The domed amber is set in a fine bezel setting, which measures 10.6 mm side to side and 22.1 mm north to south. The total length of the pendant with the bale is 29.7 mm. The dome of the amber sits 6.6 mm from the bottom of the setting. The glistening colours of the amber are like rich, smooth honey...The pendant weighs 1.8 grams, as amber is a very light stone. Both the pendant as well as this gorgeous treasure from the sea are in great vintage condition.
