Antique Victorian Dendritic Agate Rose Cut Diamond French Import Pendant

Ancient civilisations used agate stones as amulets for protection and healing. Dendritic agate, also known as moss agate is considered to be a stone of abundance. It is also a symbol of Greek dryads, the goddesses of trees, of woodland and tree spirits.
Agate is a variety of quartz and it has been used widely in jewellery as a semi precious stone. As it is formed by the deposition of silica from groundwater into igneous rocks. It comes in a variety of colours and patterns. Hard stone cameos are carved out of agate where the layers of colours allow for the carvings to have a dual tone. There is moss agate, banded agate, dendritic agate......the nature creates the most wonderful of art.
This Victorian pendant is hand crafted in 1884. It bears the hallmark of the owl with "75" on its bale. This hallmark was used for jewellery imported from non- treaty countries into France. We tested the metals, the yellow metal is 18 karat gold while the rose cut diamonds are set in silver. The dendritic agate, in autumnal tones of browns looks gorgeous with the gentle twinkle of tiny rose cut diamonds.
The agate measures 15.8 mm in diameter and it is polished smooth to a very slight dome. The diamond set disk measures 19.2 mm top to bottom, with its width 19.05. The total length of the pendant with the bale is 27.2 mm, and it weighs 3.3 grams. Both the agate and the pendent are in lovely antique condition.
