Antique Natural Persian Turquoise With Farsi Gold Inlayed Engraving
We are in love with this antique jewel, set with the most gorgeous, bright blue, natural Persian turquoise. She gives us those mystical vibes...
The frame is Victorian, dating from around 1880-1890, and made in 18-22 karat rich, yellow gold. It was originally a pin, which we had converted into a pendant - why it reads sideways.
The beautiful, large piece of turquoise has a mother stone seen on the reverse of it. It is engraved in Farsi, with the lettering inlayed with gold. Oftentimes, precious stones or pieces of artefacts purchased in the Far and Middle East as souvenirs, were set by English jewellers, in Victorian style on gentlemen's return from their travels. The fascination with antiquities was at an all time high in the second half of the 19th century.
We have been told that the engraving is likely Persian (Farsi). The word is difficult to read, but assumed to mean "Brave". But, we were told, as you read it, the word doesn't really look like a proper word. It may mean that the turquoise may have been engraved by someone who did not speak Farsi, and so the word did not come out perfectly. From their knowledge and expertise they assume it is the word for "Brave". We will go with that but welcome your input, should you know the answer, it would be much appreciated !
In the meanwhile, we love the sentiment, because to be brave is everything. Brave is within all of us, we just need to find it when those times call for it. And - every day, to be brave in small, everyday things and to dream big and make those dreams happen.
This magical, dream pendant measures 33.88 mm top to bottom, including the bale. The turquoise with the inner frame measures 21 by 16.88, and in the outer frame it is 25.5 by 22 mm. There s a tiny little nick between the inner and outer frame on the right of the pendant, which you can see in the close up photos. It does not show when the pendant is worn, it is a very minor imperfection. Other than that the antique condition of it is great. The pendant has a good weight of 6.1 grams and feels lovely and smooth in your hand.
We adore .... this Persian beauty, we think it really is full of beauty and magic, and we love that !
