Antique Georgian Keepsake Memorial Mourning Urn Locket Pendant Brooch

Be still my beating heart ....... we cannot explain to you just how much we love this little antique mourning locket in a shape of an urn.
It dates back to around 1790-1800 Georgian England and is hand crafted in 9 carat rose gold (the gold is tested as such early pieces rarely had any hallmarks). Smooth and graceful gold frame is studded with lovely, natural split pearls surround and contains the finest, intricate gold initials over a lock of brown hair. The contents of the locket are covered with slightly domed rock crystal, both at the front and the reverse, and it is in lovely condition.The skilful execution of this Georgian treasure, in sweet miniature is endearing. In Georgian memorial jewels pearls symbolised tears, while the urn is a neoclassical motif, representing the soul's immortality or life cut short. In Christianity, urns represented a vessel for the soul resting and awaiting resurrection. It was common for memorial jewellery to also contain the lock of hair, of feature an inscription with the name and a date of passing. This little jewel is adorned with the initials of the person passed, and we read it as "CF", to "CJ".
The locket is a tiny, perfectly executed jewel, just 23 mm long and 15.9 mm wide. Its total length with the pendant bale is 29 mm. it weighs a dainty 2.67 grams. The photos came out darker than the piece in reality to be able to show you the intricate detail of this piece. The locket and all the original pearls are both in wonderful antique condition.
