Antique Edwardian Chunky 18K Gold Diamond Gypsy Ring

This fabulous diamond gypsy ring is fully hallmarked telling us it was made in 1914 in Chester, England.

Chester made jewellery is highly collectable. The main centre of jewellery production in England at the time was Birmingham. Chester rings are more of a rarity and are considered to be of superb quality. Hand made in 18 karat rich, buttery, yellow gold this ring has a full set of hallmarks with "18" for English 18 karat gold. The ring is also stamped with an assay mark for Chester, the date letter "0" for 1914 and makers mark " JKN".

The ring features a simple and classic domed design with the smooth gold surface. It graduates gracefully down to the back of the band and it is solid and heavy. The lovely white and bright old mine cut diamond is set in the centre in a star setting. The diamond is lovely quality, white, bright and clean, estimated to be colour G, VS clarity and to weigh 0.18 carats.

Gypsy rings became very popular from the mid 19th Century and were a sign of wealth. Initially worn by men, they became popular with ladies, particularly as a wedding ring from around 1875. The name ‘gypsy’ was given as apparently gypsies of the time designed this type of shape and setting. On the flip side, gypsy rings were also treasured by nobles such as King Edward the VII, who popularised this style even more between 1901 and 1910.

This elegant diamond stunner is a size US 9 3/8-9 5/8 or UK S 1/2-T. It can be adjusted in size up or down moderately, please check with us before purchase. The ring measures 22.9 mm across your finger, looking from the top, and 7.65 mm north to south. It sits nice and low at 3.5 mm off the top of your finger, feeling smooth and silky to the touch, it is very comfortable to wear. The band narrows to 3.6 mm at the back. It weighs a delightfully weighty 9 grams. It is suitable for both ladies and gentlemen to wear and would make a fantastic wedding band or a stacker. Also, gorgeous on its own ! The ring is in a fantastic antique condition.
